The whole design of the app is a promise you can audit. Read the privacy policy → it’s short, because there’s very little to say.
- No server. WunderType has no backend. There is nothing for us to see, subpoena, or lose.
- No telemetry. Zero analytics SDKs, zero crash reporters, zero identifiers. NSPrivacyTracking is false.
- No accounts. No sign-up, no email, no device fingerprint. You download, you install, you write.
- On-device by default. Pick On-Device AI and your text is processed inside the app — never sent to any server, not even localhost.
- Direct if cloud. Pick OpenAI or OpenRouter and requests go straight from your Mac with your key. No relay.
- Keychain-secured. If you store an API key, macOS encrypts it. Not UserDefaults. Not a file.

Does it really work in any app?
Anywhere the macOS Accessibility API can read a text selection — which covers virtually every native and browser app. For Electron apps that don't expose text nodes, WunderType falls back to simulated copy/paste and restores your clipboard afterward.
What is On-Device AI? Do I still need Ollama?
New in 1.5, On-Device AI runs models directly on your Mac's GPU using Apple's MLX framework — no Ollama, no API key, no internet after a one-time model download. Pick from four models (Gemma 3 1B, Granite 2B, Phi-4 Mini, or Gemma 3 4B), and your text is processed entirely inside the app. It's the recommended default for new users. Requires Apple Silicon (M1 or later); on Intel Macs, Ollama remains the local option.
Is Ollama really free?
Yes. Ollama is free, open-source, and runs entirely on your Mac. WunderType talks to it at localhost:11434. No usage caps, no API key, no account.
What about OpenAI / OpenRouter costs?
You bring your own API key; WunderType has no intermediary server. You're billed directly by OpenAI or OpenRouter for whichever model you pick.
Can I use multiple providers?
Yes. Set a default, then override per prompt. Some users run grammar on the built-in On-Device AI and reserve OpenAI for heavier rewrites.
Where is my API key stored?
Inside the macOS Keychain — encrypted at rest, never in UserDefaults, never in a plain file, never synced by us.
Will it slow my Mac down?
No. WunderType is a sandboxed menu-bar agent (~20 MB) with no background daemons. It only wakes when you press a shortcut. On-Device AI runs inference on the GPU just for the moment it corrects your text, then idles.
